マーク No. 101 Some verbs of "memory" (Part 2)
      ---「記憶」に関する動詞の使い分け(2)

This Column is a continuation of the previous one, and therefore I will follow on with the same numbering.

(3) recall / recollect

思い出す・思い起こす・回想する・思い出して言う
These two verbs are very similar in meaning, and in almost all situations either can be used.

"Remember" can also often be used instead of them. However, "recall" and "recollect" have a slightly more formal nuance, and are often used when we are remembering experiences, events, scenes, etc. in the past.

Also, "recall" and "recollect" can suggest "remembering and speaking", as in this sentence: She recalled / recollected some of her experiences.

Here are the common patterns with these verbs:

I couldn't recall/recollect her name/who she was/seeing her.
(彼女の名前/彼女が誰か/彼女に会ったことを思い出せなかった)
I recalled/recollected that I had seen her.
(彼女に会ったことを思いだした)

In addition, it is useful to remember the following idiomatic expression:

As far as I can recall/recollect, I have never seen her.
(私の記憶では、彼女に会ったことは一度もない)

(4) recall

思い出させる・想起させる
The meaning is similar to that of "remind" in (2) (a) in the previous Column. But notice the different grammar patterns:

What you have just said recalled an experience to me.
What you have just said reminded me of an experience.
(たった今あなたの言ったことが私にある経験を思い出させた)

I hope that these two Columns have helped some readers sort out the grammar and meanings of these "memory" words.
